KYOTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Kyoto University (Associate Professor Ryoichi Shinkuma, Graduate School
of Informatics), the University of Electro-Communications (Associate
Professor Hiroyuki Kasai, Graduate School of Information Systems), and
Kobe Digital Labo Inc. (Kazuhiro Yamaguchi, head of the Advanced
Technology Development division) will exhibit their research results of
a new future-predicting technology that uses 'relationship metrics'. The
exhibit will take place at CEATEC JAPAN 2014 commencing on October 7,
2014.

Relationship metrics refer to data that quantifies the sense of distance
between people, things, and places based on data from life loggers.
Research has been underway since September 2011 through commissioned
research dubbed "New generation network R&D program for innovative
network virtualization platform and its application" The research has
been commissioned by the National Institute of Information and
Communications Technology (NICT), an independent administrative agency.

The highlight of this year's exhibition - themed "Changing lives!
Data-based technology that predicts the future" - is a future-predicting
application that uses actual TV broadcast usage data called TV metadata
(*1) which is provided by M DATA Co, Ltd. The application makes
predictions and visualizes the data using unique visuals based on the
relationship metrics. Associate Professor Shinkuma, who originally
conceptualized the technology, is scheduled to present an explanation of
the technology, a commentary on future prospects, and results of
verification based on actual data on October 8th and 10th from the Mini
Stage.

Future-predicting application

This is an application that predicts relationship between people,
things, and places by using relationship metrics. For this occasion, TV
commercial broadcast usage data was selected for use from the TV
metadata provided by M DATA Co, Ltd., who is also a member of MSSF (*2).
Visitors can observe the relationships between companies, products,
well-known entertainment personalities and such at a certain point in
time, and compare the ensuing predictions with actual outcomes. Visitors
can also gain first-hand experience of discoveries that may lead to new
services, including 'changing people's impressions', and 'anticipating
trends'.

Mini Stage

"Case examples of efforts in the practical application and performance
verification of 'relationship technology' that predicts future events
from all data surrounding daily lives"

*1: What is TV metadata?
TV metadata is TV broadcast usage data
provided by M DATA Co, Ltd.
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. M DATA
creates TV metadata by examining television programming and commercial
broadcast content from broadcasters in the regions of Tokyo, Nagoya, and
Osaka, uniquely summarizing their results into "when," "where," "what,"
"how," and "how long (in seconds)," and then converting the data into
text-based and database formats. http://mdata.tv/

*2: MSSF is the Mobile and Socialized Systems Forum (http://mssf.jp/en/)
This
forum promotes commercial development with the goal of practical
application of the technology. Currently, approximately 50 organizations
participate.
