HAMLET ESSAY on Characters
Kevin Blue

Hamlet was a young man who had to deal with many problems because of his father king Claudius. This story is filled with lots of interesting characters and habits. He once had the chance to kill him in the back when he was praying but he did not because it was immoral. Everybody started to think that hamlet was crazy because he wanted them to think so but we all know that hamlet really was not crazy. King Claudius soon became aware of this and decided to retaliate through his wickedness.

At the start of the story, hamlets friends see a ghost of old hamlet and tell young hamlet that old hamlet is back as a ghost. The ghost of old hamlet tells mini-hamlet that his father king Claudius killed old Hamlet. Hamlet (the protagonist) decides that he was going to plot his revenge by acting crazy and not really doing anything but act like a dick. During this time, hamlet’s girlfriend Ophelia dumps him because of there father thinking that he was a nut job. Everybody contemplates the effects of craziness on themselves in words. This is funny because hamlet kills her father, Polonius, in a curtain with a sword. Ophelia eventually goes crazy in the play and I believe this is because she thinks hamlet is crazy and she wants to get back with him. She eventually drowns and gets everybody fighting each other except for old hamlet and Polonius because they are dead.

The moral of hamlet is that you should stab people in the backs right away if they are going to make you mad. Because hamlet did not do this right away everybody ended up dead and sad. Even Rosencrantz and Guildenstern end up dead and stuff even when they were all the way in England. This is a pretty sad play that demonstrates how waiting to do stuff makes things worse than when it started. Acting crazy does not help the situation at all either. In one scene, Hamlet meets a few clowns in the graveyard, but they are not really clowns. These clowns make jokes about death and throw around bones and pieces of such. Hamlet talks to these clowns as they dig the grave for Ophelia and they give him the skull of Yorick, hamlets old jester guy. Hamlet looks at this skull and gives the “to be or not to be speech” in front of everyone. At this point hamlet only has one friend left who is his friend Horatio. Friendship can be powerful and that’s why everyone should have friends in order to have somebody always by your side when things get tough. Still, hamlet never told his friends all his secrets so they could not help in the long run. In the end of the play, everyone dies except for Fortinbras who become the new king of Denmark. The English people show up and tell them that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead but nobody cares. The end of the story almost presents a new slate for Denmark to build on. This all complies with the Marxist theory of a superstructure that will always be around even when the kings die and stuff. I guess there is no longer something rotten in the state of Denmark… except for Polonius!
