Claim: Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive.
Reason: It is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated.

This is an era of competition as well as cooperation where a nation tries confirms its leadership adopting any of the strategies that is opportune. And to confirm the leadership the nation tries to patronize the cities that will represent the glory of the nation. A glory that can be represented in terms of culture, traditions, economy, military power, architecture and so many others. Here the author claims that government should ensure financial support for the large cities to thrive as cultural traditions are preserved and generated in those cities. Before making any hasty conclusion I would like to place my views first.

According to sociology society was formed in a area with abundant food supply, good transportation and strong fortress. The society then turned into a kind of civilization such as Mesopotamian, Roman, and Greek etc. In the course of time the perimeter of the society is extended and gives rise to a nation with many cities. So at the beginning of the history it was the major cities where the cultural traditions were generated and those cities were further bolstered to flourish.

When we look into the present status of the large cities now days we will have a different scenario. Actually the cultural traditions are getting polluted or marred rather than being generated even though the scenario may be different from nation to nation. If we consider the case of developing nations such Dhaka of Bangladesh, Mumbai of India, Kabul of Afghanistan etc we observe that the large cities have undergone demolition because of war. Not only that with the development of the communication technology these large cities have quick access to the developed world which in turn causing the drastic change in culture practiced there. So the cultural traditions are undergoing a transformation rather than being generated and preserved. It is the rural areas or small towns where the cultural traditions remain preserved.

On the contrary in case of the developed countries such as London of England, New York of America, Paris of France etc the culture have been generated and preserved in the course of time. In fact with the economic evolutions which have a great influence in the culture these nations had been able to maintain their leadership and continue to maintain the traditions in pristine conditions in their large cities.

In conclusion I would like to mention that the comment that the author made varies in the context of time and economy. Generalization of the statement might not be appropriate rather we need to mention the particular nation while claiming the role of the large cities.
