The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.

"As other companies have recently stated that their employees take the Easy Read Speed Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a 500 page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read would cost acme only $500 per employee-a small price to pay when you consider the benefits. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, to improve productivity, Acme should require all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."

The argument states that to improve productivity, acme should require all of his graduates to take easy read course. To validate this argument certain facts are provided like increase in reading speed of one graduate, promotion of one graduate from assistant manager to vice president. But, the conclusion is based on vague statements that lend a little support to the conclusion. The argument contains many flaws.

First of all, argument states that increase in reading speed leads to more productivity. But only one parameter of increase in reading speed is considered for increase in productivity. There might be other reasons also for increase in productivity.

Secondly, argument states that one graduate can read 500 pages report in two hours. But, it does not provide any data for other graduates ability. This argument applies the ability of one person to represent a large number of graduates. His ability to read fast might be due to his good command over the language, his high IQ. Individual differences also play important role in determining an individuals ability.

Further, argument states that faster one reads more information he can absorb in a single workday. But, fast reading does not ensure that reader must absorb the information he is reading. It might be possible that fast reading reduces the intake of knowledge.

So, the conclusion is based on fallacious evidences which lend to small buttress to conclusion. The argument might be more convincing if some data is provided for increase in productivity due to fast reading, data of more graduates is given. Then argument may be more promising.
