To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.

Today, the constituents of a city fairly represent the society. People from various part of a society or geographic region tend to congregate in the city in pursuance of a better life and greener pasture. Migrant workers, students, tourist, entrepreneurs, engineers, doctors, craftsmen, laborers etc are common faces you encounter in the society. These people, who now reside in the cities, represent a broad sample of a society. Thus, it is possible to understand the characteristics of a society from its major cities by sampling the characteristics of these people.

Most cities have museum and historic centers that catalog information about the society and historic materials that tell a story of how the society came about. Historic materials such as ancient arts, weapons, clothes, images of past leaders, books etc, can be found in the museum. In most cases these materials come from different cities exhibit the characteristics of different people. An attempt to examine these materials or access the repertoire of information contained in the museum can take you back in time, to understand the characteristics of these people. It would not have been easy to get holistic characteristics of a society if we take a case of only one city.

In terms of religious charateristics, different cities are known for different kinds of belief. By taking cross-sectional assessments of different cities we can define the collective behavioral characteristics of a society. For instance, if one city is known to embrace the idea of monotheism and the other maybe skewed towards deism. Without comparing the different cities that make up a society, one makes an error in judgment to characterize the society as wholly deist or monotheist.
