Essay topics:

to understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.

The salient features or culture of a society is described by the fact that how people of that society live and interact with each other. The claim that the study of cities show us the characteristics of that society does not hold firm ground in a sense that cities does not represent the true characteristics of a society. For instance if some one wants to study the characteristics of water he should get clean water not contaminated water. The reason is that if something is incorporated into water then the water is no more in its real form. Same case is with cities since there are a lot of people living in a city coming from different societies which ultimately results in mixture of cultures.

In order to study the culture of a society one must survey country side or rural areas which truly reflect the ethos of the that society, since rural areas are in their pure form on the other hand the same does not hold true for the cities. In Pakistan, for instance, cities contain people from different areas and different cultures thus cities are in impure form. In cities people wear mostly pant and shirt nevertheless this is not Pakistani culture, on the contrary if some one studies rural areas of Pakistan it is quite conspicuous that people wear shalwar and kameez which is ture characteristic of Pakistan.

Likewise in India in 2 cities, Chennai and anchi, there exist 2 different cultures. The wastage of food by the grooms’ family ,for instance, in Ranchi, shows that brides’ family has provided food in surfeit, whereas, a clean plate would serve as a mark of infamy. Yet the wastage of food in a similar marriage in Chennai however, shows that the family is dissatisfied with the food and or may be food is insipid hence is considered as an insult to the brides’ family.

Furthermore if some one wants to know the characteristics of western society it is impossible to get to know the true ethos of the society by survey of Newyork city. The reason being that in new york there live prople from many cultures and as a whole it doesn't represent a single society. Moreover people which are living there,in spite of belonging to different cultures, do not reflect their own society.

Now of course, there are always some exceptions, for example, if one looks at Saudi Arabia there is one typical culture that can be found everywhere and that is women wearing 'Abaya' to cover their complete bodies except the face, feet, and hands from 'Ghair-Mehram' people,A mehram is an unmarriageable kin with whom sexual intercourse would be considered incestuous, a punishable taboo. Ghair-Mehram is total opposite of Mehram. Of course, With Modernization women no longer wear black Abaya only there are different colors of Abaya available to, which typically show the women taste Nevertheless, It is still Abaya and women cover their bodies witch it is a typical culture prevailing everywhere in Saudi Arabia.

In conclusion, it is crystal clear from the above examples that cities does not show the characteristics of a society, if the exceptions are not under consideration. However study of economy is one of the few cases in which study of big cities may bear some fruit. In contrast if some one wants to study the culture of a society one must visit the rural areas which are the only source of finding out the characteristics of that society, because the roots of ethos of a society lie in the place which holds one culture.
