In order to help small businesses thrive, government should play a minimal role in private business matters.
Small businesses thrive because of the freedom and room for experimentation they have. The advantage the small private businesses have is that they are flexible and unlike government run enterprises they can experiment with the services and products.
However, it must be noted that minimal-role does not equal no-role. There have been instances in the entrepreneurship arena where many small businesses perished because of monopoly by a few. The problems of entry and exit barriers in business are well known. The government thus should intervene to ensure that every business has equal opportunity to thrive and there are no bullies.
Therefore, I’d agree to the point that to propagate a healthy environment for business and helping them out, the government must play a minimal role restricting itself to being a watchdog than a controlling institution.
