The pie chart illustrates the four major reasons that lead to less productivity of the agricultural land. On the global basis, the land degradation is affected primarily by over-gazing (35%), deforestation (30%), over-cultivation (28%) and other (7%).

The table demonstrates how these causes influenced three regions of the world during the 1990s. Deforestation has the largest impact on Europe as it accounts for the 9.8% of the land degradation, followed by 1.7% in Oceania and 0.2% in North America. On the other hand, over-grazing is the main factor of land degraded in Oceania (11.3%), comparing to Europe (5.5%) and North American (1.5%), which result as a minor impact. Besides, 7.7% and 3.3% of land degraded corresponding to Europe and North America are due to over-cultivation.

Overall, over-gazing is the primary element that causes land degradation and Europe (23%) has the largest percentage in the total land degraded among Oceania (13%) and North America (5%).
