The chart below shows the average daily minimum and maximum levels of two air pollutants in four big cities in 2000.

The bar chart represents peak and minimum levels of sulphur dioxide and nitrous dioxide, measured in micrograms per cubic metre, being disposed in four major urban centres in the year 2000. Overall, Mexico city was the most polluted city with the highest level of both air pollutants.

To begin with, an almost equal maximum volume of both S02 and N20 of approximately 200 micrograms per m3 was observed in Mexico city, which was nearly twice the minimum amount of about 100 micrograms per m3. Meanwhile, Los Angeles was highly contaminated with N2O. It had the minimum and maximum N2O amount of 39 and 104 micrograms per m3 respectively, whereas the maximum SO2 volume stood at only 10 micrograms.

The second most polluted city was Beijing which was the city with the lowest minimum N2O level (14 micrograms per m3), while its N20 level was 3 and 4 times higher than those of Los Angeles and Calcutta. At the other end of the scale, peak SO2 levels in Beijing were 130, while in Mexico City they were at 200.

Turning to Calcuta's air quality, a minimum of 47 micrograms per m3 and a maximum of 59 micrograms of SO2 and from 30 to 52 micrograms of the other pollutant was recorded on a daily basis.
