The line graph depicts sales data for five different genres of music between 1980 and 2010. Data is given for pop, rock, classic, R&B, and ballads, and sales are measured in millions of units sold.
The most notable characteristic of the data recorded in 1980 is the fact that classic, R&B, and pop are three least popular genre; each of these genres sold fewer than half a million records. In the same year, rock and ballad sales were roughly three and two times higher than the other competing genres, respectly. However, between 1980 and 1990, their lead in sales diminished.
After that, there are many noticible changes. Firstly, the overall amount of sales increased dramatically starting in 1995. Up until this point no single genre had sold more than 1.5 million copies in a year. However, by the end of the period, the top two selling genres alone totaled approximately 5 million sales. This figure comprised of ballads, which is the only genre to sell more than 2.5 million records in a single year. Despite the laege sales increases of most genres, sales of rock music had drastically declined by end of the period.
