The given bar charts show changes in the number of marriages and divorces in the USA between the years 1970 and 2000, as well as the number of marital status of american people in the years 1970 and 2000.

Overall, it can be seen that there was a downward trend in the number of marriages, while there was a fluctuated trend in the number of divorces over the whole period considered. The proportion of married couples was the highest in both 1970 and 2000 compared to that of others marital status.

In 1970, there were 2.5 million marriages in the USA and 1 millions divorces. The marriage rate remained stable in 1980, but fell to 2 million in 2000. In contrast, the divorce rate climbed to 1.5 million in 1980, before falling down to 1 million in 2000.
Around 70% of citizen were married in 1970, but this figure went down to 60% in 2000. The proportion of widowed people decreased slighly in 2000 to about 5%, whereas that of divorces increased at about 10%. Finally, the figure for never married people started at about 10% and finished at 20% in 2000.
