The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
The line graph shows US. Energy utilization and sources in 6 major categories from 1980 to 2030. The units are given in quadrillion units (qu.). Overall, fossil Fuels dominate and surpass other sources, and have an increasing trend as a projection.
At first glance it can be seen that, Petrol and oil were main energy source throughout the timescale. It started from 35 qu. which is almost the sum of all other sources in year 1980, had a fluctuating trend for 20 years, but increased steadily after year 2000 until 2030 and ended up with 50 qu. Similarly Coal and Natural Gas had also increasing trend although, coal keeps its trend upward and reaches 32 qu. in 2030, projection shows that natural gas reaches its plateau in year 2015 with 25 qu. and keeps at this level for the next 15 years.
On the contrary, nuclear energy and alternative clean sources, like solar/wind and hydro-power are not used commonly, all started from 3 qu. in 1980, and their use fluctuated in a band between 4-9 qu. throughout the timescale. Unfortunately, projections shows that use of green energy will not increase in future noticeably.
