Immigration in UK
The chart illustrates the long- term types of global migration in England between 1999 and 2008. Overall, although there were fluctuations, the trend was downward for the number of people deciding to net migrate, while the others experienced an upward trend in which the figure for immigration was much higher than that for emigration.
As can be seen from the chart, at the beginning of the period, the number of people coming to the UK was 480 thousands, which was 180 thousands more than that of people migrating and was 2.5 times as much as the net migration’s rate. From 1999 to 2003, there was a gradual rise in the number of immigrants as well as emigrants in England before reaching a plateau at 510 thousands for the former and remaining steady at 470 thousands in 2003 for the latter. The next 5 years witnessed the fact that a number of people who chose to immigrate went up significantly, reaching a peak at 600 thousands and keeping nearly unchanged, meanwhile, there was a slight decline in the immigration rate and then a considerable increase to 420 thousands in 2008.
With regard to the figure for net migration, after a dip in the first 4 years, the number of people surprisingly peaked at 250 thousands in 2004. However, there was a noticeable go down in this amount, falling back to 180 thousands in 2008.
