Lecture + Reading passage regarding altruistic behaviors

The lecture's content shows a complete opposite point of view over what reading passage says regarding altruistic behaviors. On the first, it is stated that there is not such a thing as true altruism, as the animals or humans who show altruistic behaviors are in fact receiving or have received some reward from it. Contrary to what is said on the second: that humans and animals are capable of behaving altruistically without gaining any reward for themselves,

More specifically, in the lecture the professor suggests that there has been evidence supporting the fact that meerkats don’t act under altruistic motivation, as they have already eaten by the time their watch begins and have greater possibilities than the other meerkats to find shelter after giving the alarm voice over a predator presence. This two things represent a gain for the individual meerkat and is contrary to what is established on the reading passage, where the animal only watches the others eat while it is exposed to danger by standing guard.

Furthermore, the professor also defends that humans don’t show true altruistic behaviors when donating organs, as they may as well be receiving appreciation from the stranger receiving the organ as well as they could do from society. Additionally, the professor believes that by doing such altruistic acts, people increase their self-worth, feeling more valuable and consequently, receiving a reward for its acts.
