The reading and the lecture are about the Tidal Power. The reading gives a brief explanation about the generation of power from tides with the available technology and also provides possible solutions for implementation of these technology for production of power. However, the lecturer explains that although, the tidal power is renewable energy sources it still might have possible impacts on the environment surrounding the area and casts doubt on the possible solutions made in the article.
First of all the, the author claims that building a barrage or dam across a river estuary or the mouth of the bay can help in the production of electric energy in several stages. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She states that the construction of the dam might may negative effects on the surrounding environment. It can impact on the migration of the fishes, introduce salinity in the estuary and even affect the flora and fauna surrounding the estuary.
Secondly, the author states that with help of of the tides they can use it in a way to power the turbines which in turn provides energy. It suggest to take into account of the tides of the coastal region and use it in a way that can help to power the turbine. The lecturer opposes this point by explaining that the power produced by these sources a just a fraction of what actually is needed and it indeed has a bad effect on the tidal vegetation. Furthermore, she points out that it will also affect the fishing boats and can have negative effects on the economy.
Finally, they author mentions that tidal power is renewable, non-pollution and contributes no greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that although tidal power being non-polluting they should even consider the possible negative effects that a construction of a dam or a barrage would have on the environment and species depending on the estuary.
In conclusion, the lecturer effectively casts doubt on all of the claims and theories presented in the reading.
