TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The passage states that, providing an option to work four-day week instead of a regular five-day week for less pay would benefit the employees and economy as a whole for three reasons. However, the professor explains that it won't have the desired effect as described by the author and refutes each of the points provided by the author.

First, the reading states that giving the option to work four-day workweek will help companies by making the employees well rested, satisfied and less prone to error without incurring any extra expenditure. However, the professor explains that the companies will be paying more in that case. According to the professor, companies will need to hire more employees. They will need to expend more in training and medical benefits for them. Also, more office space and computers will be needed for the extra employees. As a result, the overall costs will increase because of the policy.

Second, the article claims that the policy will help to solve the unemployment problem as for every four employees who avail this opportunity a new job will be created. The professor refutes the claim by saying that, the companies might ask the existing employees to do overtime to make up. He states that companies might also raise expectations. The employees might be asked to do the same amount of work in four days instead of five days. In that case, the current jobs will become unpleasant.

Third, the reading posits that the policy will improve the life of employees by providing extra time to indulge in personal and family life. But the professor explains that it has some risks of reducing the quality of life of the employees. The employees with four-day weeks will have decreased job stability as they will be the first to loose job in case of lay offs. In addition, they might be passed over for promotion because the management will look to have employees working five days for continuous operation and supervision.
