TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The author explains how the short workweek can be of advantage to the company and also the employer. In contrast to this, the speaker explains the disadvantages of short workweek for the company as well as the employees who opt for four days work a week.

The author explains his view that employers who insist on working four day a week and accept 80% of their pay have many benefits like employment rate increases and payroll does not increase as people are hired at a rate of 1:4. i.e., for every 4 employees working for 4 days a week with 80% of salary, 1 new person is employed for 80% salary because of which employment rate is increased, costly errors are reduced, lower salary and increased free time improves quality of life of an employer.

The speaker has opposite point of view. He asserts saying that though it is a fringe benefit for the employee, it is a loss for company. He describes the possible disadvantages of short work week. Firstly, if a new person is employed, it forces the companies to spend more on his training, medical and health facilities. And it doesn't make a difference on number of days he work. In addition to this, more office space and computers are required and also hiring is costly. An alternate solution to this is overtime work can be performed so that in 4 days, 5 day work is completed. But the disadvantages would be worse as it decreases the jobs ability.

Moreover, employers who opt for short workweek are at a high risk of loosing jobs during recession, promotion to management level will be reduced as continuous coverage and consistent supervision for the whole week is needed at that level in most of the times.
