It is stated that the results of a work being done by a team is always better, in comparison to when done by an individual. However, as per the lecture, when a company carried out an exercise in which the work was delegated to team, the observations and results were quite contradictory.
As per the paragraph, it is mentioned that, when a work is undertaken by a group rather than an individual, it is benefitted from the wider knowledge and ideas of several people. However, practically it was observed that not all the group members contributed and few were having a free ride.
It is mentioned that, a problem gets done more quickly when tackled as a team due to the collective effort. But, as per the lecture it is stated that a project got delayed significantly as the members of the group were unable to a reach to a consensus collectively, thereby causing delays.
Another advantage of working as a team is division of work. Unfortunately, as per the lecture, it was not observed. Some people in the group were not contributing and moreover, it was also observed that some group members became more influential as compared to others. Thus, most of the crucial decisions were taken by these influential members rather than forming a collective decision. In addition, group members who tried to find faults with the decision were shunned by the other group members.
Most importantly, the members who were actually contributing in helping to solve the problem felt bad, as the recognition went to the entire group rather than an individual. Hence, they felt disturbed when they saw the group members who didn’t even contribute a bit getting the same recognition
