TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The author expresses three functions of the Chaco Canyon, in New Mexico in the American Southwest, including residential and food storage purposes, and a place for holding ceremonial events. The professor, on the other hand refutes all these three functions by providing the following reasons.

First of all, on of the purposes of the Chaco Canyon was mentioned in the article to be residential because of its huge number of rooms. . According to the lecture, although from outside, the Chaco Canyon looks like Native American apartments , from inside, there are not as much as fireplaces suitable for housing hundreds of residents. There are only 10 fireplaces which can serve 10 families and could not be suitable for hundreds of people. Therefore, how the large number of people can cook in the Chaco Canyon without enough fireplaces.

Secondly, author claims that the Chaco Canyon might be used for grain maize storage. This hypothesis is also refused by the professor, mentioning that there is not much traces of grain maize, preserved in large quantity in the Chaco Canyon building. Moreover, storage containers are not found in the Chaco Canyon structure. Hence, this function of the Chaco Canyon is also rebutted by the professor.

Finally, professor states that the Chaco Canyon cannot be used for ceremonial events, the function which is mentioned in the text. The reason, professor raised is that in addition to broken pots which were found in the deposits of the mound, there are other materials too. These include construction materials, such as stones and sand and the broken pots might be from the construction workers who threw away their pots when they finished their food. Therefore, deposits of broken pots cannot be the firm evidence of holding a huge and crowded ceremonies in the Chaco Canyon, the theory which is stated in the text.
