TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c

The lecture and reading both are discussing about the decline in otter population in Alaskan coast. The lecturer believes that predator theory holds true, but the author is against it. He is in favor of pollution theory , which professor mentions as weakening.

To begin with, the professor mentions that there isn't any evidence of dead sea otters floating on the beaches as, the otters are eaten by orca.. Therefore the pollution theory is weakened and predator theory holds true. The author challenges this point and states that oil rigs and other sources of industrial chemical pollutants are mainly responsible for the decrease in number of sea otters which, caused declined in there immunity which, made them susceptible to hazardous infections.

In addition the professor contends that orcas usually feed on big whales but the population of whales is also reduced due excessive hunting by humans, which has caused the orcas to change there diet from whales to smaller sea animals. There there is decline in all types of sea animals such as seals, otters and other smaller animals. The writer on the other hand, claims that pollution is only main cause of decrease in population of otters as well as other smaller sea animals. This is as a result of disturbance in complete ecosystem due to pollution and not because of orcas as they mostly prey on larger whales than sea otters and others.

Finally, the speaker concludes that orcas cannot swim in shallow as well as rocky places so, the population of otters in those regions are still intact. This strengthens the theory of predators than that of pollution. On the contrary, the text states that the decline in otters population is uneven is because of unequal distribution of pollutants and not because of orcas.
