TPO-16 - Integrated Writing Task The United Kingdom (sometimes referred to as Britain) has a long and rich history of human settlement. Traces of buildings, tools, and art can be found from periods going back many thousands of years: from the Stone Age, t

The reading passage states that the science of archaeology, which works to uncover and study old cultural artifacts, had to deal with some serious problems and restrictions in Britain. The passage provides three reasons for supporting the idea. The professor, meanwhile, casts serious doubts on this claim and refutes all of the reasons. She says, in fact, the government ratified new guidelines and rules to foster the archaeological investigations.
First, the article asserts that because of the construction projects, most of the valuable artifacts were lost or destroyed. The lecturer, on the other hand, disagrees and makes the argument that due to the new rules and guidelines, construction sites, to get permission for making the building, cannot start working without getting excavated by archaeologists.
Second, the reading declares that the monetary support for archaeological studies was not enough. Besides, the altering government priorities brought about frequent reduction in funding. However, the speaker refutes this claim by saying that due to the new rules, archaeological investments have to be supported by the construction companies. Thus, this funding from the construction firms opened new avenues for more studies and investigations.
Third, while the reading passage posits that having a job in archaeology was hard and several people who wanted to become archaeologists had to search for other careers, the professor firmly comments that new guidelines opened new job vacancies for scientists in this scope. She adds that constructions needed experts to help them in tasks such as; examining the site, processing and reporting the data. Therefore, these rules enhanced more people to continue in this field.
