TPO-16 - Integrated Writing Task The United Kingdom (sometimes referred to as Britain) has a long and rich history of human settlement. Traces of buildings, tools, and art can be found from periods going back many thousands of years: from the Stone Age, t

In the lecture, the professor explains how the new guidelines implemented in the 1990s has changed the three problems concerning with archaeology in Britain mentioned in the passage.

To begin with, the reading claims that many valuable artifacts were damaged in the course of urban construction. However, the speaker refutes this and argues that according to the new guidelines, lands must be studied by archaeologists prior to any construction. If any meaningful discovery was made, a plan would be formed by various sections to protect it.

Next, contrary to the second assertion in the reading passage that the already-insufficient budget for archaeological research is still diminishing, and is focused on a few important sites due to the exclusive source from the government, the lecturer points out that now construction companies are required to pay for the research performed on their sites. This brings about new source of expenditure and enables the excavation of a wider range of sites.

Finally, the instructor rules out the accusation of scarce positions in archaeology. The guidelines, as the speaker states, has created a wealth of new careers from the discovery of historical sites to forming a report on them. As a consequence, the number of archaeologists has reached a peak in Britain, opposing the idea that many people were driven out of the field because of the lack of opportunities.
