TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for b

The reading passage discuss three reasons that that is affecting birds population and thus resulting in their decline. However, the professor in the follow up material cast doubts on these points by providing the evidences and justifications.

First, the passage tells that increased human population requires more space to build homes, offices and malls. This in turn leads to decrease in the bird’s natural habitat, making them homeless and thus causing decrease in their population. This is contraindicated by the professor, he says that in reality birds including hawks and pigeons have more and better space to live which is why their population in cities in increasing tremendously.

Second, the reading says that the increased area for agriculture is also responsible for decline in bird’s population. Conversely, the lecturer refutes this point and explains that now less land is being used for agriculture as compared to the past. This is because of the development of new crops that needs less land, it indeed produce more food per unit area as compared to the old crops in the past.

Third, the author points at the lethal side effects of the pesticides and claims it to be one of the reasons for decreasing population of the birds. However, this is questioned by the speaker. He reveals that now two major changes have been brought in the field of agriculture. One is the development and use of new pesticides that are less toxic and second is the development of new pest resistant crop which reduce the need of pesticides. Therefore, with these two developments bird’s will not be harmed.
