TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

In the lecture, the professor admitted that genetically modified trees have some advantages, but she also discussed why they can actually cause problems.

First of all, whilst the passage claims that genetically modified trees are hardier than natural populations because they are specifically designed, the professor in the lecture argued that genetically modified trees can actually be more vulnerable. Since natural trees are more genetically diverse, different individuals growing in one place will be able to withstanding different challenges in the environment, like climate change and new pests, thus guarantee the survival of the species as a whole. Genetically modified trees, on the other hand, lack this genetic diversity and are more uniform in their genes, making them more likely to die out.

Secondly, the professor explained why genetically modified trees can be more costing than natural ones. While genetically modified trees can give greater yields, as the reading passage claims, the professor reminded in the lecture that, according to law, farmers need to buy seeds of genetically modified tree every year, adding that these seeds are typically much more expensive than their modified counterparts. And it is this policy that cause additional costs to farmers.

Last but not least, genetically modified trees cannot prevent damages to wild trees. It is obvious the cultivation of genetically modified trees can lead to less exploitation of wild trees, but as pointed out in the lecture, it is genetically modified trees themselves that cause the problems. Particularly designed for adaptation in one specific environment, genetically modified trees have few problems outcompete the natural ones, and eventually wipe them out because they grow much better and faster than natural populations. So instead of protecting wild trees, genetically modified trees are bringing damages to them.
