TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task Populations of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been steadily declining for more than a century now, since about 1880. Scientists have advanced several hypotheses expla

The article discusses the decline of yellow cedar population and provide three reasons of supports. However, the professor states that we do not know what is the real cause of declining in cedar yellow tree population and he refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading claims that the yellow cedar decline caused by the cedar bark beetle, an insect parasite. The professor refute this point by explaining that yellow cedar are highly resistant to insect infestation because this tress has a high level of chemical which is poisonous to insects. He emphasizes that dead yellow cedar was already damaged or sick before insect attacks, so it not the real cause of killing these tress.

Second, the article states that the decline of trees population could be related to the decline of the brown bears. On the other hand, the professor says this is not the cause because cedar yellow tress populations have been declined all across the north coast, particularly in island which already do not have brown bears. He concludes that with or without the bears, yellow cedar trees are dead.

Third, the reading posits that gradual changes of weather may be the reason because cold climate can damage the roots of yellow cedar trees. The professor opposes this point by explaining if this point is true, tress with lower elevation would not be effected by freeze. However, both higher and lower elevations of yellow cedar trees have been suffered and dead which proof that climate changes have no effect on declining the population.
