TPO-24 - Integrated Writing Task Animal fossils usually provide very little opportunity to study the actual animal tissues, because in fossils the animals' living tissues have been largely replaced by minerals. Thus, scientists were very excited recently

In the article, the author suggests that in the recent research scientist have found evidences of the remains of red blood cells, blood vessels and collagen matrix in the leg bone fossil of the T. Rex dinosaur. However, the speaker cast doubts on the claims made in the passage by giving following reasons.

First, the passage mentions that leg bone consists of soft flexible material suggestive of relics of blood vessels. In contrast, the speaker states that when an animal die there is bacterial colonization in its bones. The bacteria feed on the remains of soft, moist tissue, thus these relics could be the traces of organic material left behind by the bacteria.

Second, the author describes about the presence of spheres inside the bones that could be red blood cells. But the professor challenges this point and explains that there were fossils of other animals as well who did not have red blood cells in them but even they were found to have the spheres with dark red centres in their bones, so this could be the pieces of reddish mineral. Therefore this point made in the passage does not prove anything.

Third, the lecturer further claims that the last hypothesis mentioned in the passage about the existence of collagen matrix is also controversial. The speaker tells that the collagen matrix or its derivatives are not present in the animals that are dead for more than 1000 years. On the other hand, T. Rex dinosaur has been disappeared for over seventy million years. Thus, there are high chances that collagen could have come from the skin of the researchers handling the bones.
