TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

The lecture raises three arguments to cast doubts on the suggestions in the passage that zebra mussels are not controllable and cause damages to local environment.

To begin with, the passage claims that the spread of mussels with human transportation is unavoidable. However, the professor asserts that ships could be required to empty the so-called "ballast water" before they arrive at North American coast, thus the mussels will be exhausted in the ocean and killed by salt water. So this policy would prevent mussel's invasion to North America.

Secondly, the speaker uses the example of Europe to state that zebra mussels are not as adapted as they seem to be. Particularly, when food source is scarce, some animals that do not originally feed on zebra mussels can actually eat a lot of mussels, thus impede mussels from dominating in an ecosystem without predators.

Last, whilst the competition between mussels and other fish species feed on plankton can diminish the population, as the passage warns, the lecturer reminds that other fish species will benefit from the existence of mussels, like the bottom living fish that rely on nutrients produced by mussels. Thus, the overall fish population is not likely to drop.

In conclusion, based on the reasons and analysis mentioned by the professor, the containment of zebra mussels is not impossible.
