TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when the

The lecture and passage are discussing different ways to prevent the accident of birds due to hitting glass buildings. The passage provides three solutions to tackle this problem. However, the lecturer found these solutions very unconvincing.

First of all, the speaker argues that using one way glass in a building is a terrible decision. This is because, the one way glass will reflect like a mirror. The sky and trees will get reflected on the buildings which will confuse the birds and they might get hit on the building. This theory was refuted in article. It states that by replacing clear glass by one way glass can be a solution to this problem. The occupants will able to see outside and birds would not be able to see inside and will consider the building as a barrier and will stay away from the buildings.

Second, the lecturer posits that coloring the glass buildings with paints isn't a good solution. He mentions that the gaps in paintings can deceive birds as holes and when they will try to strike through it; they will get hurt. Furthermore, if the gaps in the painting are made smaller the occupants would not able to see much from inside the building and will also create darkness in the room. The writer however, is convinced with the idea of painting the glass with paints can provide a good solution to the problem.

Finally, the orator is also against the third and final solution mentioned in article. It states that artificial magnetic field can be created around the buildings. As the birds uses earth's magnetic field to navigate while flying; the magnetic field around the building will keep birds away from it. The speaker disagrees and states that birds uses magnetic field only while migrating longer distances. They do not make use of magnetic field just to travel from one part of the city to another. Importantly, they use their eyes and light from sun to navigate shorter distances. So use of artificial magnetic field is ineffective in preventing birds from hitting the glass building.
