TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

The reading and lecture both discusses about the ability of whales to migrate long distances. The article suggests that whales being an intelligent animal, migrate long distances by viewing position of stars in the sky. The lecturer however, is not convinced with all the theories supporting this claim.

First of all, the passage suggests that humpback whales are intelligent animals. They have a complex cognitive ability to gaze the stars and migrate long distances. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that intelligence is not related to ability to orient by looking at the stars. He gave example of ducks who are not intelligent but by their intuition use position of stars for migration.

Second, the author implies that whales travel in straight lines for a long distance; like some birds. These birds require external landmarks for their direction. In case of whales, they rely on stars for their directions as they don't have any landmarks available in vast open ocean. The orator disagrees with this concept. He suggests that whales use earth's magnetic field to help them navigate and not the stars. They make use of chemical called biomagnetide which is present in their brain to sense the earth's magnetic field.

Finally, the writer points out that whales demonstrate unusual behavior. Whales are seen to be sky hopping; which means
they gaze up at sky for few minutes to get the position of stars for migration process. On the contrary, the speaker mentions that sharks also do sky hopping but they don't migrate like whales. Most importantly the whales do sky hopping during the day time when no stars are seen. Thus, the writers claim about star hopping is completely false.
