Both the reading and lecture are about the "let it burn" policy which allowed forest fire to burn itself as soon as possible without damage in 1960s in The United State; however, in 1988 this policy caused national park in Yellowstone to be destroyed. The reading provides three types of damage in this park and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious because she believes that fires are natural creative phenomenon not destructive.

First of all, the author of reading declares that almost trees and other plants died out and tall trees did not allow smoke to leave the forest; hence, small planets also chocked up. This point is challenged by the professor. She points out that when the trees destroyed, other new plants and vegetables had a new opportunity to colonize. Furthermore, small planets that previously did not have any chance for growing due to shade of trees, could grow quickly and finally the national park confronted a variety of planets.
Secondly, the article contends that this policy harmed small and large animals because fire not only eliminated their habitats, but also their food chain declined; in contrast, the lecturer expresses that when small plants superseded with trees, new habitats formed for small creatures such as rabbits and hairs; therefore, with increasing the population of small animals, their predators had an opportunity to recover their population faster and food chain goes up again.

Finally, the reading passage states that fire could have negative impacts on visitors and tourists and they preferred not to visit the national park of Yellowstone; consequently, the destructive consequences of this event on local business is obvious. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer and she poses that fires could reduce the number of tourists if they happen every year but such a huge fire which expend and synthesize with strong wind and low rain, is unusual and it occurs rarely.
