The reading and the lecture both discuss whether genetic modification is a good process for plants or not. The reading says that this process has such positive points, be harder trees, be gained more economical benefits by producers and prevent overexploitation. However, the lecture refutes these reasons and says that this process has some serious problems.

First, trees are more intensify against the diseases. The reading states that the trees which have produced by genetic modification are more talent to survive. For example, in Hawaii, there is a new pest-resistent plants of papaya trees that can fight with virus infections that frequently damaged the native papya trees. In contrast, the professor claims that these trees that have produced by this process are only sufficient for some especial places and climates and if the region and climate change, all of them die down rapidly. Thus, they can not survive everywhere.

In addition, it has economical benefits for genetic modification trees' producers. According to the reading, these trees are more beneficial than ordinary trees due to they grow faster, give more yields of food, fruits and other products, then the farmers can obtain more product and as a result gain more benefit. However, the lecture refutes it by saying the farmers have to pay more money for planting these trees and so they pay much money relative to the benefit.

Finally, this process can help wild trees to prevent overexploitation. The passage states that the rate of destruction of wild trees is faster than the replacing process then these modification trees are the best option to replace them because of fast growth and high yield in given geographic conditions. On the other hand, the professor refutes it as well and poses that the trees which are modification type always want to compete with other plants in water, nutrients and so forth. Therefore, they may damage other species in this competition and this not a good solution.

In summary, against the statement of the reading, the lecture refutes all reasons to modify genetically trees and provides some opposite reasons.
