The reading states that large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope which was inhospitable for animals to live as the same as today. The Paleontologists have proposed that dinosaurs one of the dinosaurs have migrated to the warmer parts. However, in the lecture, the professor says that none of the reading's arguments are convincing. She refuses each of the reading's claim.
First of all, the reading asserts that the edmontosaurus's diet champions the migration theory. The edmontosaurus fed exclusively on plants. Thus, there would have been no plants growing during the cold in winter so they probably moved to other places for at least part of the year. In the lecture, the professor refutes this by saying that the summer temperature was higher one hundred million years ago than today. Thus, they were more vegetables than today. They even could have lived in winter during dark and cold days by these foods.
Second, the reading pushes forth the idea that the edmontosaurus skeletons indicates that they lived in herd. Also, many modern-day migratory animals like caribou and buffalo live in herd which would help them to coordinate their migration. On the contrary, the professor points put that there are other reasons for living in herd such as protection. She makes an example of an elk living in the western United States which live in herd and does not migrate.
Finally, the reading mentions that the edmontosaurus were physically capable of moving long distances in order to reach hospitable regions. The professor contradicts this claim by saying that juvenile edmontosaurus were not capable of migrating long distances as the same as the adult ones. Clearly, this would slow the herd and the matures one did not want to abandon them, thus they had to survive the winter.
