Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the intimate usage of the burning mirror by Greek in the battle with the Roman. While the reading passage lists some factors as feasible reasons which show the usage is just a myth, the professor counters these specific points and presents some clues to call into the question for the information in the reading part.

First of all, the article posits that the ancient Greeks did not possess that technological advancement to produce the large, parabola mirror. However, the instructor refutes this claim. She asserts that there was no demand to lead a fire by the huge sheet of a mirror. The small pieces of mirror which can easily shape the parabolic curvature were capable of causing the fire too. Besides, the mathematicians of that period were familiar with the knowledge of parabola. Thus, based on this science, they could arrange those small mirrors.

Next, meanwhile, the passage mentions to an experiment illustrated that the wood can sit in the fire just after ten minutes, which is a long duration; the lecturer challenges this experiment by mentioning to the other substances in the ship. She states that although the wood burns in ten minutes, the ship contained other materials apart from the wood such as a sticky substance named pitch which sets in a fire for a second. As a result, at first, the mirror burnt the pitch and the fire expanded in the whole ship by this way.

Finally, the text surmises that the Greek's other weapons such as the flaming arrows presented the same function as the mirror; so, the build of burning mirror was useless. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on the accuracy of this claim. Based on her assertion, the Romans were familiar with the flaming arrows and they knew how to prevent them since they were visible while attacking. Nevertheless, the mirror just looked like a simple mirror with no attacking appearance; it surprisingly led to the fire just after a short period; so, they could not defense themselves.
