Both the reading and lecture are about Sinosaurpteryx's fossil which was a type of dinosaur and found in volcanic ash in 1996. Several line patternts on its skin have caused researchers to think that Sinosaurpteryx had feather. The reading provides three reasons that these lines are not related to the feathers and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments unconvincing.

First of all, the author of reading declares that since this fossil has been discovered among volcanic ashes, it may have decomposed into fibers and the mentioned lines appeared after Sinosaurpteryx's death. This point is challenged by the lecturer. she points out that scholars could find other animals' fossil in this place and fortunately their fossil had preserved in the fire very well and they showed all of details without finding any fibers, thus Sinosaurpteryx's lines cannot be related to fibers.

Secondly, the article contends that most of dinosaurs' body was including an organ which was called frill; hence, the aforementioned lines could have been the remains of frill and not feathers; in contrast, the professor expresses that there is a great chemical difference between frill and feather. As a matter a fact, the feathers usually have Chariton- a chemical substance-; however, the frills do not have such a substance. Analyzing Sinosaurpteryx's fossil determined that fossil had Chariton which is associated with feathers.

Finally, the reading passage states that feathers play a role in keeping warm or flying; however, surveying fossil shown that the lines were located in Sinosaurpteryx's backbone and tail; therefore, it could be useless. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer and she poses that occasionally, feathers can have another function such as attracting mate. She elaborates on this by mentioning that there is a bird which is called Pickup. This bird has colorful feather and it uses them for appealing mate and this behavior is called displace function. In an experiment, the researchers discovered that Sinosaurpteryx's fossil had colors such as white or orange; so it may have applied its feathers for attracting its mate.
