The reading and the lecture both discuss the problems are provided for birds by using the ordinary glass windows in the buildings. The reading has three solutions to solve these problems and it says these prevent wild birds from the death. However, the speaker disagrees with them and says that these solutions also have problem.
First, using one-way glass instead of common glass. According to the reading, humans can replace their clear windows by one-way glass which it helps birds and also it does not provide any solution for people. Thus, persons, who are inside the buildings, are able to see out but wild birds cannot see interior and then they think that those are a solid barrier. In contrast, the professor states that these glass windows models behave like mirrors and they reflect the sun light, sky and tress. In addition, the birds cannot understand that it is not a mirror, so they fly across the windows.
In addition, using colorful designs windows. The passage argues that the painter can paint several lines over the glass and those provide a condition to birds that think they cannot fly through the glass. On the other hand, these lines do not have any problem for humans who live in the buildings, because they can see out and also sunlight comes into. However, the lecturer says that if the lines be small, there is no any difference between clear glass and small lines glass, then the birds try to fly through the glass. On the other hand, if the lines be big, the buildings' settlements are not able to visit out. In addition, the inside of the house will be dark.
Finally, using magnetic field. The reading suggests that magnetic field guide birds away from buildings, because the birds use earth magnetic field automatically in order to go from a side to another side. On the other hand, the professor claims that it is true that birds use magnetic field while are flying, but not for short distances and they use their eyes and sunlight for close distances, whereas they apply this ability for long distances like immigration before winter started.
In summary, although the reading provides three solutions in order to protect the birds, these solutions have also problems naturally and the professor refutes all of them by providing some reasons.
