IN this set of material, the article and the lecturer disagree on the merit of what was the purpose of the " great houses," the huge stone buildings that include hundreds of rooms with three or four stories high tall. The reading passage suggests three theories that give reasons what that humongous house used. He states that the Chaco house structure was clearly residential, or might be a good storage for a crop. Or it might be utilized as a ceremonial center. In contrary, the professor in the lecture challenges the passage; he believes that none of the three theories are convincing. Furthermore, he presents three reasons proving that those theories are skeptical. Following a brief interpretation to this perspective.
First of all, the reading passage claims that the primary purpose of that great house was residential. He believes so because the structure from outside of that building is mimicking the style of public buildings at Taos, New Mexico; that house which people lived for hundred of years. However, the lecturer refutes this idea. He believed that it did those buildings are similar to each other from outside, But, they are different from inside. At the Chaco, there were not enough fire -places and insufficient for hundreds of people or families to live independently. Those few fire -places which were enough for ten people to live not hundred to occupy those hundred of rooms.
Secondly, the author in the reading passage asserts that those building might be use for a storage of crops, which would be able to store without any spoiling for a long time. Whereas, the professor in listening passage rebuffs this theory. He thinks that with excavations of that place, scientists were unable to find any remanent of the maize crops or potteries which should be used for that purpose.
Last but not the least, the writer in the passage argues that this place could be used to held secret ritual ceremonies for the people who live at that time. The writer compares the ceremonies of the native Americans people at Pueblo Alto, which use large piles and need hundred of people to participate. Moreover, the pots which found at the area could be what left after their ceremonies. Nevertheless, the professor in the lecture opposes this argument. He states that in order to have such place for ceremonies, people need to use several potteries. But, with excavation scientist could not find that large number of those potries and he suggests that those few broken potteries could be trashed from workers who used them for carrying their food inside the great house for their work.
