TOEFL essay:It has been said, “Not every thing that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

It is true that not every thing that is learned is contained in books.
You can gain knowledge from books as well as from experience but knowledge gained from books is different from knowledge gained from experience.

First reason tell about Learning through experience can be more effective than learning through books
For example, we can gain knowledge by reading books of driving manual for getting driving license from which you can know rules and regulation of different signs. But when you sit at front of the steering of vehicle than you can experience by driving the vehicle. By this you can experience the driving.

The second reason is about if a United States person want to explore Indian country, he can gain knowledge by reading several books on History of India. But by reading books you can imagine about India. " books are like guiding light in one's pursuit for knowledge". If the same person, if he personally experience to travel to India. He will gain more knowledge which effective, like he can know the different cultures, taste the indian food, meet different people.

The third reason is that "Knowledge gain by experience can be passed over to others". For example If you are pursuing some experiment or research in science field. You are personally doing the research but each and every step of the research is documented. But if any of the research is failed you have several reasons why that research got failed, you have everything documented in your file or so. If the same experiment or research is conducted by one of your junior's in your field, you can guide them by your experience.

In my opinion, the summary of essay is knowledge is gained from both books and experience but experience is more important than reading books.
