TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

The author of the reading believes that it beyond the bounds of possibility to maintain a station on Venus and provide three problems to argument his statement. The professor casts doubt on all the claims made in the article. He thinks that the idea of maintaining a station is feasible.

First of all, the author points out that spacecraft might crush apart while landing on Venus due to the hight atmospheric pressure. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that station could float like a balloon in the atmosphere instead of landing, as the pressure is much lower there, in fact, it equal to Earth's pressure level.

Secondly, the author contends that there is barely available water and oxygen sources on Venus and that humans will have to import them from Earth. The professor rebuts this argument by saying that people could use carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid to produce oxygen and water.

Finally, the author states that the clouds in Venus' atmosphere lack the sunlight, that is needed to generate electricity. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the people can get adequate energy collecting light both from clouds that reflect it and from the sunlight that reaches the surface. So, there will be ample energy to power the station.
