The passage and the lecture are both about the process of salvage logging, in addition, it's advantages and disadvantages too. The author of the reading explains that it is a beneficial out way for removing the non-living trees, which causes damage to the natural environment. While the professor casts doubt claims made in the article. He says that, actually, this is not a advantageous to the surroundings.

Firstly, the article describes that, the destruction, which is due to dead trees, suitable area is not provided for the new growing trees. Hence, inhibit the population of new forest. However, the lecturer opposes this, he states that, this damage is basically creates positive environment to the soil, in turn, more growth of the forest occur.
Secondly, the reading passage contends that, it is very effective for the other organism like: spruce bark beetle, which is harmful for the new generation of trees. So, salvage process is important. The speaker rebuts this argument, he mentions that, it is a study conducted already, that about the 1000 years ago, this insect is not causing any disaster to the forest's trees.
Lastly, the author claims that, economy also depends and focuses on this process, the wood can be use for many other products as well as it gives opportunity to the workers, in this field. The professor posits that, the process of salvage logging takes huge machinery or vehicles; like: helicopter and trucks, which in return, costs much high than the damage's economy effects. In addition, it is not giving the permanent carrier to the workers, as it is only for the time being.
