The following appeared in a memo from the director of student housing at Buckingham College."To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should build a number of new dormitories. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current

Making the dormitories available to students enrolling in the college is a good idea and this will certainly provide benefits to the students and will add a value to the college. Making dormitories is hard on the budget and when something which will consume a whole lot of funds from college, it should be properly planned. Any wrong speculation can lead to a blunder. Also, college should see if there is any other priority than making dormitories like building labs and other infrastructure.

Authors statement starts with the argument saying that the enrolment is growing, well that’s fine with the number but it does not give information about whether the local students are applying more or it is the students from other states. Efforts will go futile if the students are local because they will be able to commute to the college and then the facility will have no use. It can be another way around, there can be more students from other states and can surge the dormitories making the facility lacking enough room to get going. Afterall college will not start building another one if they found out more students are coming from abroad. This information should be cleared and then only planning should be done on how big the dormitory should be.

There is another weak argument that the enrolment will double over next 50 years. This type of argument has no certainty even if the college has made the observation from surveys. 50 years is a long time and in this period the trend can vacillate and students may find another college more attractive than this. Their conclusions should not be made on the basis of what will happen after half a decade. The investment should be done based on present conditions.

The other area which needs to scrutinize is the problem with the rent. The statement is saying that rent has increased in recent years. Well, this absolutely puts the financial burden on the students but there is a certainty that this may be temporary. If so, students will again move to houses and the dormitories will be void of them. Also, the rents with neighbouring state and colleges should be compared. We don’t know if this will be less than other places. If so, students may still find the rent prices lucrative enough and will go on to live in rented houses. The information regarding this is vague and more data should be collected to make the conclusion.

In the end the conclusion made that attractive new dormitories would make prospective students more likely to enrol at Buckingham is just based on weak arguments and without proper research and planning the execution of the dormitories can go wrong. College should see what is the priority and whether there is exigency in the case of students not finding the proper house. The trend should also be compared with other states and colleges. After all the data collected proper decision should be made as this will consume a big fat chunk of money from the college's coffer.
