It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

While the importance of societal recognition and the value we attach to it is of prime concern in anybodies life, defining ourselves primarily through identification with social groups calls for a more detailed evaluation. First and foremost, question arises is, what is defining ourselves constitutes. It it our self belief, thinking or our bringing up or on the other hand what others say about ourselves or the importance they give? Answering this question is never easy, as it depends upon individual and some are selfcentric and tends to give their self prime importance, while others are more outgoing in nature and they percieve their social standings as their value.

While it is never too easy to hardline on the basis of nature, like self centric or outgoing behaviour, to determine what an individual values while defining him/her self. There is always a mix of the two and the influence of one on another varies very much depending upon social sorroundings, ones experiences, effects of media too name a few. The current generation of heavy media, exposure have imparted a sense of beleif among us that, who so ever if popular or have a good social standing tends to be more reverred among peer groups and regarded highly. This has created a age whereby people with most social standing are most regarded and core values such as integrity, honesty, ingenuity have lost its shine among the blaze. In such a scenario it is not very much difficult to say that people do tend to define themselves on their social standings. Even those of aloof nature are not left untouched and they also submit to this frenzy at some point of time.

Some people do exist who tends to value their self and their belief most highly and are least affected by what others have to say about them. However such a stand is generally prominent in those persons who are by nature stoical and are very rare. Such persons are mostly into indivdual work which may be scientific, monetary or art. Even such they at times require social acceptance for their continuation of work as nobody in this world can work in isolation. The very nature of human being as social animal defines the qualities and attributes of the person and his work. The degree to which a person values his/her social standing varies and so is his own perception of what defines him.

We see that being a social animal, it is in our blood to get recognition in our peer groups, society and thus we in our deepest secret do desire to get social fame. i would also like to add that some do it by making themselves prominent, while others let their work speak for themselves. Our history if rife with people with both personalities like Sir issac Newton who kept his scientific discovery secret for 27 years because he didnot like to be pestered from others while history also has Edwin Hubble, who for all his brilliance was a showy characted and didnot refrain from stooping to a level of passing others achievment as his own. Thus we see that their is a mix of both stoical and outward behaviour, but the influence of social standing is always present in ones defining himself.
