There are many ways of testing the knowledge of the students. While most of the Universities test the knowledge of the students by closed-books and closed-notes, some Universities allow different types of exams like "Open-Book, Open-Notes" exam and "Take-Home" exam. This essay discusses advantages and disadvantages of a take home exam.

First of all, in the take-home exam, students need not bother to memorize any formula. They just need to understand and firmly hold their knowledge. The can open the book anytime they do not know the answer. Even they can search the information on the internet. Secondly, students can do their examination at home or anywhere they want. As long as they finish their exam on time. Time depends on their teachers, which makes them feel comfortable and they are free. Thirdly, the question will be usually challenging, which requires higher level analysis thinking skills, but they have extra time to study problem carefully and answer them slowly.

There are many benefits of take-home exam, but they are disadvantages as well. Firstly, in the take-home exam, the rule of this exam is the students must do it themselves and not to consult friends or senior students. But there will have the risk of inviting improper collaboration or help from others. Students are supposed to be ethical in answering take-home exams. Secondly, it can not assess the level of the student exactly. It influences to students’ quality of the degree. Thirdly, sometimes they just search the answer on internet but they do not brainstorming, it makes their brain activity not well, it reduces their ability brainstorming.

Summary, take home exam is a way of obtaining knowledge; it is a better way rather than recall or memorization exams. There are many benefits of take-home exam, but they are disadvantages.
