The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030

The line graph describes the energy consumption in the USA in terms of different types of fuels from 1980 and 2030

Overall, all fuels have showed an increasing trend towards 2030. It can clearly be seen that petrol and oil is the most common type in fuel consumption.

There were 35 Quadrillion Units(qu) of Petrol and Oil used in 1980, which was 15(qu) and about 18(qu) more than the consumption of Coal and Natural gas. In contrast, the consumption of remaining fuels, namely, nuclear, solar and hydropower was the same, at about 4(qu).

By 2012, petrol and Oil continued to dominate the fuel consumption, the number of which increased to 40(qu), although its figure fluctuated between 1980 and 1995. It appeared that the figures for Coal and Natural gas followed in the similar pattern as Petrol and Oil, with the numbers for both fuel fluctuated and reached 24(qu), while the consumption for Nuclear and Solar/Wind were on the increase, climbing to 7 and 5(qu). However, the usage of Hydropower started to drop(2.5 qu).

From this period on ward, it is expected that the usage of petrol and Oil as well as Coal will follow a increasing trend, rising to 50(qu) and 30(qu) respectively, while the level of natural gas consumption as well as Hydropower is expected to hold still. At last, Nuclear and Wind/Solar are predicted to produce slight more energy.
