The diagram compares the expenditure for books in four different countries from 1995 to 2005, in 2-yearly intervals.
At first glance, it is noticeable that all four countries witnessed an upward trend over the period shown. Although Italy spent the third largest on books in the beginning, it was overtaken by Austria in the last year of the survey, while Germany and France ranked first and second during the timescale respectively.
In 1995, 80 million US dollars was paid for books in Germany, while the figure for France was reported at below three quarters as high as that of Germany. 1999 saw a slight increase in the amount of money spending in Germany, after which it dropped gradually in the next 4 years before hitting a high of around 95 million. In contrast, the figures of France rose steadily until it reached over 70 million in 2005.
Initially, Italy stood at 50 million, while Austria spent the lowest money among four at 30 million. The former experienced a small fluctuation until 1999 and reaching over 60 million in the last year. Whereas the latter saw a considerable growth and outstripped the former in 2003 to peak at a little more than 70 million.
