The chart illustrates the proportion of estate in owned and rented shelter in England and Wales in the years 1918 to 2011.

Overall, the percentage of rented accommodation was by far the highest as nearly fourfold as owner's figure at the beginning. However, there was an unpredicted replacement that the ratio of owned accommodation was by far the highest as two times as rented figure to the ending up.

When it comes to the downtrend, renting household experienced a significant drop from 80% in 1918 to 31% in 2001 before a slight rise to 37% in the next ten years.

When it comes to the uptrend, there was a gradual increase from 22% in the first year to 40% in 1961 of owning household's proportion before rose sharply to reach a peak at 69% in 2001. Consequently, it decreased slightly to 64% in the final year.

In comparison, there was a striking resemblance in the figure of two kinds of households which accounted for 50% in the middle of the period.
