The bar chart illustrates the percentages of families that purchased and leased houses in England and Wales during 78 years. Overall, it can be seen that the percentage of owned accommodations shows an opposite trend from that of rented accommodations.

Started at 1918, families in owned accommodations stood at approximately 23 percent, and then increased to around 32 percent in 1939, before remained steady in 1953. After that, it started to increase significantly to approximately 68 percent in 1991, before made a slight increase in 2001 to around 69 percent. However, there was a decrease in 2011, to about 65 percent.

Households in rented accommodations began at around 76 percent, more than three times higher than the owned accommodations in 1918. In 1939, it then dropped to around 68 percent, before became unchanged in 1953. After that, there were significant decreases from 1961, until it finally reached approximately 32 percent in 1991. Furthermore, in 2001, it fell slightly to around 31 percent, before started to rise again in 2011 to around 38 percent.
