The chart illustrates the proportion of households owning and renting dwellings in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Renting accommodations was more popular during the first four periods especially in 1918, over 75%, compared with only 21% of owners in the same year. After that, it saw a slight decrease and then remain constant at 69%from 1939 to 1953. The percent of households in rented accommodation continued to decrease until in 2001 and fell to the lowest point at 31%. Finally, it increased back to 36%.
By contrast, there was an opposite trend of households owing. From 1918 to 2001, it saw an increasing patten with the exception of that
it held steady at 31% between 1939 and 1953. In 2001, owning dwelling reached a peak of 69%, and then decreased back to 64% in 2011. However, both of them reached the same level at 50% in 1971.
Overall, people more liked to rent accommodation before 1971 while people preferred to own dwelling after 1971.
