Altruism

Essay topics:

Altruism

The professors is talking about a recent finding where the altruistic characteristics of Meerkats and humans are further examined to call into question its unselfish nature.

Firstly, the professor says that the sentinel meerkats first eat themselves before standing guard. In other words it contradicts the passage which states that it is not eating any food, where according to the professor the sentinel is already full and thus does not require any food.

Secondly, by standing guard sentinel is not making himself an ideal target, as the passage implies, rather it is increasing its probability of survival, as it is the first one to spot a potential predator. And the proximity of its location compared to the burrow means that it is also the first one to escape danger. Also after giving an alarm the other meerkats will cause commotion which will draw the predator to the other meerkats. Overall the professor points out that the seemingly selfless activities of meerkats are actually not as such.

Lastly, professor takes a critical look at human altruism. She argues that by donating food or organs, an individual receives appreciation from other people, which could lead to increased self worth for that individual. This features could be highly valuable for many people. And thus professor points out there are rewards available from this seemingly difficult tasks and thus contradicting the passage which points to the lack of reward from this activities, where in reality an individual can gain invaluable reward.
