Altruism

Essay topics:

Altruism

Altruism is a behavioral characteristic, where one gives up one's necessity for the benefit of other's, commonly observed in humans, including other mammals. An individual performing altruistic act not only gives up the self-benefit for the sake of others but also, in some circumstances risks its life for other's safety. The behavior of meerkat sentinel, the standing guard of the group and human donation of organs are commonly cited examples of altruism. However, not all accept these instances to completely represent altruism.

In the meerkat group, sentinel(the standing guard) produces an alarm cry when it spots a predator, like a hawk. It is believed that the alarm cry warns the other members of the risk, and affords them to escape. As a consequence, the guard exposes itself to the predator and risks its own life for the safety of others. It has to guard the group while others hunt and eat. Moreover, it has to flee alone while others are relatively well protected in the group. This activity of sentinel is often regarded as altruism. However, this concept, due to the lack of sufficient information, often draws the need for re-examination. It is reported that the sentinel eats to a full stomach before it starts its duty as a guard. In addition, the plausibility of its alarm cry to distract the predator away from it to other members of the group can't be rejected. It might provide it with additional safety. Unlike the previous consideration, the later argument questions the altruism in meerkat.

Human donation of organs, like kidney, to the family members or even the strangers is also regarded as an altruistic act: the one who donates renders the prolonged life to the receiver for nothing material in return. However, the non-material achievement of the donor subjects this act as an unreliable example of altruism. The donor is well recognized in society, he/she is lauded with appreciation and approbation. Considering the enhanced self-worth after donation, it can no more be considered altruism.
