The reading and the lecture are both about "Altruism" which is the act of self-sacrifice for intrest of others. The author of the reading believes that individual doesn't earn anything from such acts. The lecturer challenges the statement made by the author. She is of the opinion that an individual gains something from the act of altruism.

First of all, the author suggests that unselfish act among people doesn't benefit oneself. It is mentioned that in the case of donation of an organ the doner doesn't receive any reward from it. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says the doner receives appreciation and approval from society which can be considered as a reward for such altruistic act. Furthermore, she argues that a person has a high sense of self-worth after such an act.

Secondly, the writer contends this kind of activity is also common in the case of animals. The article states an example of a mammal meerkat among whom one individual acts as a standing guard when all other meerkats look for food and eat while he goes without food and puts himself in grave danger. The lecturer, however, rebuts this assertion by stating that close research on those animals reveals that the mammal that stands guard is the one who already had food and thus doesn't go hungry. She elaborates on this by mentioning that those animals are in the least danger as they are mostly standing near the borrow. Furthermore, when the sentinel gives an alarm it causes other meerkats either to move closer or run about thus taking the predators intrest away from the watching guard. This shows that they are actually less in danger compared to others.
